Flying the flag for fairtrade in Mossley

Mossley's Fairtrade flags are once again flying as the town celebrates Fairtrade Fortnight.

The event takes place between February 27 and March 12. It will shine a spotlight on the climate crisis and the increasing threat it poses to some of the planet’s most favourite foods.

Mossley’s Fair Ted has a simple message - choose Fairtrade now and help save our favourite foods.

Cocoa, bananas and coffee could soon be much more difficult to find on our shelves. Climate change is making crops like these harder and harder to grow.

Combined with unfair trade, communities growing these crops are being pushed to the brink.

The future survival of the world’s most popular foods - such as bananas, cocoa, and coffee - hangs in the balance unless we achieve inclusive and equitable climate solutions, with farmers and agricultural workers playing a central role in the climate response.

But here’s the good news. If more people choose Fairtrade it means extra income, power, and support for those communities, as they work to build sustainable and prosperous futures. So not only is choosing Fairtrade best for people and planet, but it could also help save everyday treats like chocolate, bananas and a hot cuppa.

Fair Ted and friends will be at Mossley Co-op on Wednesday, March 1, and Friday, March 10, between 11am and 4pm both days, sharing news about farmers who produce Britain’s everyday staples.

Fair Ted will also host a Community Big Brew on Thursday, March 2, at Mossley Methodist Church between 10am and 12.30pm.

People can pop along to find out more about Fairtrade and climate change, the future of our food and those who produce it.

They can also find out about the urgent threat to the future of food grown overseas.

Fairtrade celebrates and supports the farmers abroad who grow some of Britain’s everyday staples.

Each year, thousands of schools, organisations and communities nationwide play a key role in promoting Fairtrade Fortnight and raise awareness of the link between trade and poverty.

This year, all six Mossley schools will take part at Fairtrade  Fortnight with assemblies, learning, competitions, baking, breakfasts, etc.

Hundreds of exciting events traditionally take place across the country during Fairtrade Fortnight, organised by Fairtrade supporters and ethical shoppers in local communities who are committed to campaigning for social justice.

From Belfast to Bournemouth and Aberdeen to Aberystwyth, Liverpool to London, each one will bring home the message that choosing Fairtrade, whatever your budget and wherever you shop, means a more sustainable future for our favourite foods and an investment in farmers to take care of the environment.
