An Audenshaw councillor is urging people to stop using and dumping gas canisters, and fly tipping, after carrying out a clean-up of the area. 

Audenshaw councillors Oliver Ryan, Teresa Smith and Charlotte Martin say they are leading the charge to keep the streets of Audenshaw clean all year round. 

They were out early on Saturday morning (12 June) litter picking around Audenshaw Primary School, the old Blue Pig pub and the Lumb Lane underpass. 

With the help of volunteers, they cleared more than six bags worth of rubbish from the area but say they were left particularly annoyed to find a large number of gas canisters, used as a recreational drug, and dumped in large quantities around the streets. 

Councillor Ryan said: "Thanks to all the volunteers who came to help, we'll be heading out regularly through the year and covering as many of our local 'grot spots' as we can. I must say though, gas canisters are an epidemic on our streets and we cleared hundreds of them on Saturday.

"My message is clear, stop using them, stop dumping them and stop fly tipping in Audenshaw - if we catch you, we will fine you to the fullest extent of the law."
