Angela Rayner has been named by Sir Keir Starmer as deputy prime minister and secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities.
After receiving a huge 15,575 votes, Angela Rayner retained her seat as the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, and has also been handed her own department as she takes the helm of the department for levelling up, housing and communities.
Rayner takes over the role from Michael Gove, and is only the second woman to hold the position after Therese Coffey in Liz Truss’ 49-day government.
She has been a Labour MP in her Ashton-under-Lyne constituency since 2015, and has served as the deputy leader of the Labour party since 2020.
Adding to his cabinet, new prime minister Keir Starmer has named Rachel Reeves as chancellor, making her the first woman in history to take on the role.
He has also announced Yvette Cooper as the new home secretary, David Lammy as foreign secretary, Pat McFadden as chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and John Healey as defence secretary.
