Speaking on Sky News, Ashton's Angela Rayner says the Conservatives are reaping 14 years of "chaos. scandal and decline".
As she stood in the pouring rain, albeit with an umbrella unlike Rishi Sunak when he announced the elections in a pouring Downing Street, Ms Ashton says the party is determined to get "people's faith back in politics" and "turn the country around".
She said: "The exit poll is very encouraging, but we haven't had any results yet.
"We have taken decisive action to go out and tell people we are putting the country first.
"We have a tremendous calibre of candidates.
"Keir has transformed our party and the polls are showing people have supported us in that."
