The Tameside TechKnow Festival is looking for people who want to get in the know with digital technology and the internet to get involved.

Taking place from 12 to 24 June, it's all about encouraging anyone who has never used a computer or tablet, or lacks the confidence to complete tasks on the internet, to gain some skills by joining in with friendly and welcoming events.

For those who already use technology, it offers the opportunity to explore fresh ideas, imagine new possibilities, and expand skills.

TechKnow will showcase all the training and help available across the borough and celebrate digital advances. It will also raise awareness of issues around the digital divide and direct people to the support available to them.

The festival also provides a great opportunity for people to enhance their skills and interest in digital activities and learning.

Councillor Vimal Choksi, Tameside Council’s executive member for towns and communities, said: “We live in a world where we all need digital skills. Whether we like it or not, more and more everyday tasks are taking place online, from job applications, to banking, to ordering goods for home delivery or even dealing with the council.

“Without basic skills people could miss out on so much, such as the best insurance deals or bank accounts that offer better rates of interest.

“I fully understand there are people who find this daunting but TechKnow is there to help them in a fun, friendly and relaxed way.”

As well as basic IT support, sessions include internet safety tips, how to use apps, business information and family history research as well as 3D printing, film-making and virtual reality.

Activities will be taking place across the borough with a main event on Saturday 17 June at Ashton Library and in the marketplace (10am to 3pm). Partners include Tameside Community Computers, Henshaw’s, the Co-op and Digital Bees.
