Grants worth up to £500 are being offered to groups based in or currently working in Tameside, to fund active ideas for children and young people aged 5-18 years old.
Tameside Council is backing Action Together's Use Your Energy programme, funded by Sport England, by encouraging voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise organisations to apply for the grants.
An active idea is a sustainable idea which helps children and young people who are currently less active to try something that will appeal and engage them to become more active and healthier whatever their skills or abilities.
There are lots of ways to become more active - such as volunteering, nature trails, conservation, gaming and home workouts.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Increasing our population’s physical activity levels is one of our many priorities. Physical activity contributes to both good physical and mental development – it has a range of physical and emotional benefits, from developing muscle and bone strength, increasing concentration and educational performance and learning, to boosting mood and reducing the risk of many lifestyle related diseases.
“There are lots of places to use to become active such as youth clubs, school clubs, gyms, parks and open spaces or your street. Local groups should take this opportunity to apply for the funding to help children and young people to become more active, more often.”
