In his latest column, Denton MP Andrew Gwynne writes about his weekend trip to Denton's twin town Montigny-le-Brettoneux.

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to be invited to Denton’s twin town, Montigny-le-Brettoneux. Located near Versailles, the town has been twinned with Denton since 1992.

Town twinning became popular in the aftermath of World War 2. With towns across the UK seeking to build links and friendships with European counterparts after years of violent conflict.

It has been a huge success, and Denton is thrilled to be twinned with both Montigny-le-Brettoneux and Kierspe in Germany.

I’m president of Denton Town Twinning, and have made many long-lasting friendships with people in our twinned towns. It’s great to foster these kinds of positive relationships, but also to compare notes on challenges facing our respective residents. I’ve learned a lot from our counterparts in Montigny-le-Brettoneux, and hopefully they feel the same!

Recently, in the aftermath of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it was very moving to see local dignitaries from Denton’s twin towns travel to Denton to pay their respects and offer their condolences following the death of our longest-serving monarch. This is testament not only to the breadth of affection for Queen Elizabeth II, but also the international friendships Denton has built with its twins.

Anyone can become a member of Denton Town Twinning, and I’d really encourage you to get involved if you have some free time. Not only will you get to sample some incredible food and drink from our twinned towns, you’ll also meet new friends and ensure that Denton is well-represented internationally. I’m always incredibly proud to represent Denton abroad. As I opened the Christmas market in Montigny alongside the Mayor, their local MP and the Senator, I chewed the ear off my French counterparts by chatting about Denton’s own Christmas events, and the brilliant small businesses running stalls and special festive events.

I’d like to thank everyone in Montigny for always making me feel welcome and part of the family. Cross-nation collaboration is really important, especially in these turbulent and challenging times.
