Hattersley regeneration continues apace

Hundreds of homes are being built and refurbished in Hattersley as part of the area's substantial redevelopment.

The regeneration of Hattersley is being driven by a partnership between Tameside Council, Onward Homes and Homes England.

Barratts have already sold 414 homes to date of the 656 properties they plan to build, with the rest to be completed by 2021.

And Onward Homes have refurbished 1,475 homes, built 155 new homes and demolished 900 properties.

Work at Hattersley train station has also seen an improvement in rail passenger usage by around 24 per cent year on year, with numbers passing 80,000 for the first time.

The council say the regeneration has also helped create jobs, training and skills opportunities in the area.

The first phase of a new district centre, including a new Tesco’s and Hattersley Hub featuring offices, library and community facilities, was completed in 2011.

Barratts have provided the funding for the partners to deliver a programme of Public Realm works. A masterplan has been produced following extensive public consultation with local residents, businesses and other stakeholders. The consultation identified the top priorities for the areas as the need for improved formal and informal recreational spaces and parking and highways issues.

The masterplan includes enhancing gateways to the estate, improving the streets with trees and landscaping, enhancing pedestrian and cycle provision, reducing traffic speeds, improving parking, signage, pathways and formal and informal play/recreation provision and improved lighting and security.

The work is being overseen by Hattersley Land Board, comprising representatives from each partner organisation alongside local residents and councillors.

Tameside Council’s Director of Growth, Jayne Traverse, said: “Much successful work has already gone into transforming Hattersley into a vibrant and sustainable community, including the building and refurbishment of hundreds of new homes and a new district centre.

“And we’re committed to continuing to invest in this successful partnership with more redevelopment to come making it a highly desirable place to live and work.”

The council say its ambitions for the regeneration of Hattersley are reflected in its Corporate Plan’s aims of aspiring to build successful lives, strong and resilient new communities, investing in a local and vibrant economy and promoting healthy lives in a revitalised area.
