Need help with your family tree? Volunteers at the Tameside Local Studies and Archive Centre on Cotton Street, Ashton, are available to help.
Whether you are just starting out or have hit a brick wall, the experienced team can lend a helping hand.
They are available to meet on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm.
To book a slot call 0161 342 4242 or email archives@tameside.gov.uk
Also, the 1921 census is available enabling greater research for those wishing to find out more about their family, see where they were living at the time and how they were employed. This census also includes divorce.
The 1921 census is significant, as it is the last census available for 30 years. A fire destroyed the 1931 census and due to the Second World War, there was no census taken in 1941.
Volunteers have also been digitising the photographs from the Reporter newspapers that you can now see on Instagram, Twitter and Flickr. You can also search for local photographs of your street, school or work on https://public.tameside.gov.uk/imagearchive/
The Local Studies and Archive Centre have a series of events in the pipeline.
The next is on Tuesday, January 25 at 2pm, a Making Friends with the Archives session will look at ‘The Great Providers’. To book, email archives@tameside.gov.uk or call 0161 342 4242 during opening hours.
