Hyde Road closure has been extended

The closure of Hyde Road in Gorton in the vicinity of ongoing roadworks has been extended further as engineers continue fixing a burst water main. 

The usually busy road between Denton and Manchester will remain closed between Far Lane and Wall Way until Sunday 7 February, Manchester City Council has said. 

But the authority - who had previously said that the road would reopen on Friday 29 January - say this is subject to the weather and could still change. 

United Utilities are still on site following the burst water main as a result of Storm Christoph last month, leaving some nearby homes flooded and many residents without water supply. 

The road has also been undergoing major works to widen the road since early 2020. 

It had previously been hoped that the project, which started last January and has cost £5.9 million, to widen the stretch of the A57 near Debdale Park would be complete by the end of January so the road can be fully reopened. 

When it reopens, the number of lanes of traffic will increase from two to four on the route, which has been a well-known area for congestion for many years. 

Last July, a new footbridge (pictured) for people walking and cycling officially opened to the public. It re-completed the Fallowfield Loop - a 14km off-road path used by pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders running from Chorlton in the west of the city, through Fallowfield and Levenshulme and on to Gorton and Fairfield in the east. 

Named after the railway line which used to run along its route, it's believed to be the longest urban cycleway in the country, running past several parks and open spaces and linking to many other cycle and public transport routes.

There had been a planned closure over the weekend of 15 and 16 January for work to continue but it was put back a week due to poor weather. 

However, the road ended up being closed earlier following the flash flooding caused by the burst water pipe.
