Hyde Road flooded after burst water main

Hyde Road in Gorton was engulfed with water on Friday morning (15 January) after a water main burst.

Scenes on social media have shown water gushing down the road between Denton and Manchester, with engineers and emergency services having to plough through it to deal with the incident. 

The water supply to some residents in the area has also been affected and it's thought the road has been significantly damaged as a result of the leak. 

United Utilities said: "Our team are still on site working hard to isolate the burst water pipe on Hyde Road to stop the flow of water. Our Water on Wheels tankers will continue to pump water into the network to keep your taps flowing.

"We're sorry for the inconvenience this may be causing you and we’ll keep you updated as we continue to repair and deal with the situation."

Labour councillor Julie Reid, who represents Gorton and Abbey Hey, said a main arterial water pipe has burst three feet wide and "emptied Debdale reservoir".

The road has been closed between Reddish Bridge and Thornwood Avenue in both directions since around 7am. People are being urged to avoid the area and plan journeys ahead. 

Stagecoach buses 7, 7A, 201, 202, 203, 205 have also been diverted as a result, with delays also being reported on the services.

Hyde Road was due to be closed this weekend as part of the £5.9 million widening project but had already been postponed.
