Tameside Council is due to start legal proceedings after travellers have illegally set up camp in Ashton.

Multiple motorhomes were pictured parked up on the field next to Springwood Way on Wednesday (23 June).

Councillor Vimal Choksi MBE, whose Ashton Waterloo ward the land is in, has confirmed that the council is aware of the situation and is in the process of drafting legal proceedings.

He said: “I can confirm that this has been reported to the Tameside Council who acted very swiftly by visiting the site and in the process to draft legal proceedings.

“Council officers will be approaching the court on Thursday with a view to get a court hearing date.

“Unfortunately, while we are going through legal proceedings, we may experience some disruptions and a possible aftermath. But, TMBC is very well equipped to deal with it and will provide all the assistance until we achieve the site back.

”In the meantime, please do not approach the travellers. If you have any concerns, then please report the police directly.”
