The Tameside Reporter begins a new series of columns in association with GMP Tameside's neighbourhood policing team.
Over the coming weeks, we will be meeting the key members of the team, finding out about the work they do and spotlighting latest appeals, advice and initiatives.
In our very first column, we meet Claire Galt, Chief Inspector for Neighbourhood and Partnerships, which covers the whole of Tameside, and has a team of neighbourhood staff, up to the rank of inspector, supporting her to deliver effective neighbourhood policing.
As a born-and-bred local, Tameside has a special place in Claire’s heart. She went to school at Fairfield High – where she has been back numerous times to support and talk to the pupils – and she has family and friends who live in the local communities.
Starting her policing career at Tameside as a Police Constable 26 years ago, Claire returned to Tameside as a Neighbourhood Inspector – a role she stayed in for over 10 years. She then achieved promotion to the role of Chief Inspector in Oldham but returned to Tameside in April 2021 and named Chief Inspector for Neighbourhoods and Partnerships in December 2021 – something which she feels very fortunate for.

Claire said: “Myself and my team are responsible for delivering on all aspects of neighbourhood policing, including seasonal operations, days / weeks of action, and medium to long-term problem solving for high, repeat demand drivers.
“We also work in conjunction with partners including the local authority, health, and various housing providers, among others, to ensure we deliver well-rounded policing across all areas in Tameside. I feel very privileged that I am able to do a job I love alongside a fantastic, committed, team of staff.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to write a column in the local paper, as it allows me the pleasure of being able to share with the readers some of the operations we have coming up, and the results. I also want to share good news, such as arrests and charges, as well as providing the public in Tameside an overview of what is going on locally – so everyone stays updated.”
Greater Manchester Police can be contacted via gmp.police.uk or via 101. In an emergency, always dial 999. Information about crime can also be shared anonymously via the independent charity – Crimestoppers – 0800 555 111.
