Denton MP Andrew Gwynne has thanked Year 7 students at St Thomas More RC College in Denton for writing to him about COP26 and for their work urging politicians to address the issue of climate change.  

Gwynne received a letter penned by pupil and Chief Steward Jack Ashton, on behalf of Year 7 Students at St Thomas More.

In the letter, addressed to the Labour MP and his office, the students highlight their concerns about the effects of global warming on ‘our local community and for future generations’ and ask Gwynne and other politicians to act ‘courageously and carefully to look after our fragile home’.  

The students also sent Gwynne a hand-crafted yellow canary and bunting for his office.

The canary – named ‘Dave’ after Sir David Attenborough – has been sent as an ‘optimistic and loving friend encouraging you to do the most you can to create a cleaner and greener constituency, country and world’.

The canary and bunting now have pride of place in Gwynne’s constituency office.  

Commenting on the letter, the MP said: “Thanks so much to Jack Ashton and the Year 7 Students at St Thomas More for such a kind, thoughtful and important letter. Climate change is the biggest issue of our time, and we need to be taking decisive, innovative, and bold action to tackle it. Earth is our only home, and we have a responsibility to protect it and care for it.  

"I will do everything I can to continue to fight for action locally, nationally, and internationally. Dave the canary will sit in my office and serve as a reminder that I have a promise to keep to the students of St Thomas More.”
