MP Gwynne welcomes Greater Manchester Long Covid research

Denton MP Andrew Gwynne.

MP Andrew Gwynne has welcomed news of a Long Covid research trial taking place in Greater Manchester and encouraged those living with Long Covid in the area to get in touch.

The research is being led by Salford Royal respiratory consultant Professor Nawar Bakerly, and aims to better understand the condition.

The Office for National Statistics estimates that around two million people across the UK are currently self-reporting Long Covid symptoms. However, despite the prevalence of the condition, relatively little is known about the disease from a clinical perspective.

Professor Bakerly's research builds on the Research for the Future Project, a National Institute for Health and Care Research Network initiative hosted by the northern care alliance.

Those wishing to take part and find out more information about the research can do here.

Commenting on the initiative, Gwynne - who himself has suffered from Long Covid - said: "As someone who started suffering from Long Covid back in 2020, I know first-hand how debilitating this condition can be, and how much it impacts your day-to-day life. Brain fog, fatigue, muscle pain; the symptoms are wide-ranging and horrible."

"It's therefore so important that clinicians get all the information they need to better treat and understand Long Covid. Professor Bakerly's initiative will help do just that, and I'm proud to be supporting it.

"If you are still suffering from Long Covid symptoms and live in Greater Manchester, do get in touch. It'll help us tackle this dreadful illness."
