In 1972, an Ashton church minister talked his way into the record books when he preached non-stop for eight hours in what was believed to be the longest sermon ever given.
It was all in a good cause with sponsors backing the Rev Tom Grant to the tune of £200 in aid of Ashton’s Albion Church.
Although he had spent a long time planning what he was going to talk about, split into several sections, Mr Grant managed to complete his marathon stint in the pulpit without any notes.
About 100 people called in at the church during the day with several staying to hear the epic sermon from start to finish.
Apart from the odd sip of water the minister managed without food or drink.
