Nostalgia: Special guests

The Mayor and Mayoress of Stalybridge, Cllr and Mrs JD Lilley, were guests of honour at Stayley Cricket Club's annual dinner and presentation evening in 1963.

Presenting the awards to the first division champions, Cllr Lilley congratulated the team on the achievement.

“I have always admired people who do things which I cannot - my ability at cricket is nil.”

Mr K Leigh, chairman of the Saddleworth League handed out the individual trophy prizes.

He said: “The club has again had an outstanding season and with the extra young talent which Stayley has, there is no reason why they shouldn’t go from strength to strength.”

A notable achievement was player C Bennett scoring the best batting average for the 13th time in 15 years.

There was a special welcome for Lancashire players Harry Pilling and Johnny Sullivan too.

Dance music for the well attended gathering was provided by the Carlton Band from Stalybridge.
