'Nothing off the table' in car parking review

Council leaders have said “nothing is off the table” after an MP called for reform of Tameside's car parking charges.

Jonathan Reynolds, the MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, said last week that parking should be used as a “driver of footfall rather than a source of income”.

The Labour-run council will launch a public consultation this week with the aim of boosting the borough’s town centres.

Mossley councillor Stephen Homer, who will oversee the review process, said: “It’s fair to say the current parking offer isn’t working. We want to attract people to shop, eat and drink in our town centres – and the current offer doesn’t do that.

“We’re looking at every option – and nothing is off the table.

“We’re really keen to hear from businesses and residents as to how we can provide a fair and sustainable parking offer which supports our town centres.”

In his letter last week, Mr Reynolds suggested three hours of free parking followed by higher subsequent tariffs to discourage all-day parking.

Most Tameside Council car parks and on-street parking bays currently cost £1.50 for the first hour, with all-day rates ranging from £4 to £9.
