Nursery rated 'inadequate' by Ofsted over safeguarding receives a 'good' report

An Ashton nursery which was branded 'inadequate' by Ofsted inspectors has now been rated as 'Good' in all categories in a follow-up visit.

Provision at a Tameside nursery was said to be ‘inadequate’ by inspectors last year.

A report said the safety of children ‘compromised’ at nursery due to lack of checks.

An inspection team visiting Kidzstop Day Nursery on Katherine Street, Ashton, said the safety of children was ‘compromised’ because checks into the backgrounds of staff had not been carried out properly.

However, a follow-up inspection last month tells a different story.

Now the management have been praised for ensuring staff are thoroughly checked before starting work.

The report, published this week, rates quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management as 'good'.

And inspector Rebecca Weston says safeguarding is now 'effective' at the nursery which has 77 chilren on its roll.

The report says: "Children enjoy their time at this friendly nursery. They are welcomed by enthusiastic staff who value what they have to say.

"Staff respond as babies use simple signs and gestures to communicate. They play peepo with babies and offer lots of cuddles. This supports children to develop strong bonds with staff.

"Staff support children to share and play together collaboratively. They have embedded consistent routines that children follow eagerly. Staff use a range of strategies to support children's understanding of changes in routines, such as the use of a bell and visual aids. At tidy up time, children eagerly work together to tidy away the toys."

The report also praised the hard work of staff in helping to improve the nursery's Ofsted rating.

Ms Weston said: "Leaders have taken action to address the weaknesses raised at their last inspection.

"They have implemented thorough vetting procedures to ensure only staff whose suitability has been checked have unsupervised contact with children. Leaders support staff through coaching and training. This has impacted positively on the quality of the provision."

She added: "The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. There is an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts children's interests first."
