Plans to convert retail shop site in Ashton

Plans have been submitted to convert a retail shop site in Ashton into two shops with an extension to provide an additional storey and create 10 apartments.

The plans are earmarked for 191-193 Stamford Street Central.

The shop site itself has been home to the ‘Amazing’ discount charity shop.

The apartments would all be one-bedroom maisonette-style properties with the plan also including the creation of 16 parking spaces for cycles.

Although the site stands within the Ashton Town Centre Conservation area, the building itself dates from the early 19th century, but is described as having been ‘heavily altered with little of its historic character remaining.

Its contribution to the conservation area is therefore considered to be at best a neutral one, and its significance accordingly low.’

A ‘heritage statement’ concludes: “The proposal should receive consent as it will sustain the character, appearance and significance of the conservation area and is thus in accordance with national guidance and the local development plan.”
