Plans to rebuild Denton storage warehouse destroyed in huge blaze

A warehouse destroyed by a huge fire three years ago could soon be rebuilt. 

Hundreds of firefighters were called to Holland Street in Denton, Tameside, on February 21, 2021 to tackle an enormous fire. At the time, Greater Manchester Police declared the blaze a ‘major incident’, with homes evacuated and people in the area being told to keep windows and doors closed.

The M67, which runs beside the site, was closed in both directions due to the thick, black smoke that was pluming from the fire.

Once the warehouse fire was extinguished, the rest of the building was left ravaged by the blaze and would have to be demolished, according to the applicant. Now, three years on, proposals have come forward to fully rebuild the Self Storage Tameside unit.

The plans would see what is left of the current building demolished and replaced with a five-storey warehouse containing storage units. The company has a number of units across the borough, and this would boost the business which offers storage space for multiple uses. 

Planning papers read: “The site unfortunately suffered a very serious fire at the site in February 2021 which has resulted in the loss of one of his large warehouse storage buildings. This building was relatively new in appearance and construction terms in relation to the others on the site, and it has significantly impacted upon and affected the operation of his business.

“The site currently employs 10 staff and it is anticipated that another three full-time equivalent jobs will be created should the planning application be successful.”

The plans will need to be approved by the planning team at Tameside Council before any construction work could start.
