Police issue advice after catalytic converter thefts at IKEA car park

Police have issued advice to vehicle owners after a spate of catalytic converter thefts at IKEA's car park in Ashton.

Steve Naylor, Acting Police Sergeant on GMP’s Tameside North and East team, said the number of thefts has reduced recently after officers worked with security staff at the Wellington Road store.

“We made CCTV enquiries and arrested different offenders so we’ve had some good results,” he told Tameside Radio.

“People should try to keep their car in a well-lit area as best as you can. You’d hope a public car park would be safe but it only takes a couple of minutes for offenders to get the car jacked up, saw off the catalytic converter and disappear.

“But being parked in a well-lit place where other people can see hopefully can act as a deterrent to criminals.”
