Northern Rail has warned passengers to expect delays and short notice cancellations on its trains around the North West this Sunday, July 28.
It blames the disruption on staff shortages, which will leave its routes between Manchester Victoria and Wigan North West, Manchester Victoria and Chester, and the line from Preston to Colne without any services at all.
There will be no rail replacement buses for these trains.
“We encourage everyone to plan ahead and check journeys before travelling,” a statement from Northern Rail said. “Particularly last trains of the day which may be earlier than usual and may be cancelled at short notice.
“If you do travel, please leave yourself plenty of time to do so and don't rely on last services.
“Trains currently showing may not run. Our control teams are working to update the train plan, but you should check closer to the time of travel.”
It could also affect travel in Tameside and the High Peak, with the Glossop branch line and Northern services to Stalybridge in danger of interruption.
Anyone with tickets for cancelled or delayed trains may be eligible for a full or partial refund.
