Residents in Denton had to be evacuated from their homes amid a bomb scare.
The bomb disposal squad were called to St Anne's Road after a suspicious item was found in a rucksack on Monday evening (4 January).
Emergency services attended at around 4.45pm and put a 200-metre cordon in place.
Around 80 nearby homes had to be evacuated, on the streets around Jet Amber Fields.
Denton MP Andrew Gwynne said on his social media that initial reports described it as "a pipe bomb" and that a controlled detonation may have been required.
But it was later confirmed that it was not an unexploded device and a controlled explosion wasn't necessary.
Evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes at around 7.30pm.
MP Gwynne added: "I’d like to say a BIG thank you to all the emergency services, the bomb disposal unit and Tameside Council for their efforts to keep people safe. At a time when they’re stretched with COVID enforcement and other issues, it’s greatly appreciated."
Greater Manchester Police has since confirmed that further enquiries have established that the item was a homemade Taser.
They said enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have yet been made.
