Rev David Warner column: Birth of a new age as we remember our loved ones

Reverend David Warner, the Vicar of Mossley, speaks on the start of the summer holidays and reflecting on those we've lost in his latest Reporter column.

I hope the summer holidays have started well for you and yours, and that whatever is planned, you have some time for rest and relaxation and to spend a little more time with your loved ones.

This year I’m delighted that we have lots of baptisms booked, as well as lots of weddings to look forward to.

It’s lovely to celebrate with these families, particularly those who’ve waited some months for their special day.

We’re also taking part in various memorial services for those who have died during the past 18 months.

I’m especially delighted to be involved in a memorial event taking place in September, hosted by Mossley Football club and Mossley Events.

It will be an opportunity for lots of folk to come together and remember their loved ones, and we hope also a fitting tribute to all those who have died this past year.

You might feel like trying to forget the past 18 months, but to be honest, every experience we have as human beings joins together to make us who we are - the bad ones and the good ones.

We need to remember those moments that were challenging and painful as well as the times that are good and easy.

It was amazing to watch the outpouring of grief and support at George Butterworth-Sice’s funeral last Friday.

I was privileged to join Milton St John’s School as the cortège passed and the children clapped enthusiastically in support, and later to be on the market ground with so many offering their presence and support.

Those we love and remember left us a legacy in a way to live, and a hope for the future.

We remember and give thanks, and in doing so, look forward with confidence and hope.
