Round-up: People who have appeared in court lately

From a man armed with an axe in public to a young woman who stole more than £800 worth of alcohol, here's some of the recent cases that Tameside magistrates have heard...

Man found in public was armed with axe

Michael Wrigley has been given a suspended jail sentence by Tameside magistrates after being found in public with an axe.

The 34-year-old, of Ravenhead Square, Stalybridge, pleaded guilty to the offence which had happened on Huddersfield Road, Carrbrook, on May 29 this year.

Magistrates handed him a four months prison term, suspended for two years.

They also ordered him to carry out a total of 150 hours unpaid work plus pay a victim surcharge of £128.

Store theft ends in jail sentence 

Tameside magistrates have jailed Simon Hawe from Stalybridge for a total of 16 weeks.

He had admitted stealing food from Aldi in the town on November 25 worth £71 while already subject to a suspended sentence order.

The 38-year-old, of Waterloo Road, Stalybridge, was ordered to pay £71.76 compensation and jailed for being in breach of the initial suspended prison sentence made by the court in March this year.

Found guilty of driving offence

Rebin Mohammed has been banned from the road for a year and fined £180 for an offence of drink driving.

The 28-year-old, of Hanover Street, Stalybridge, had denied the charge of being over the drink drive limit but was found guilty by the court.

Magistrates were told he was found to have 46 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35.

The offence had happened on August 23 on the M60 at Bury.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £34.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by three months if a driving course is successfully completed.

Unpaid work for WhatsApp note

Vance Donovan sent a threatening message via WhatsApp, Tameside magistrates heard.

He admitted the offence after sending the message in September and was ordered to carry out 40 hours unpaid work.

The 39-year-old, of Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Banned driver was twice over the limit

Disqualified driver James Ryan was more than two times over the drink drive limit when stopped behind the wheel of a car, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 47-year-old, of Lees Avenue, Denton, was given a 24 weeks jail sentence suspended for 12 months for the offence which happened in February.

The court heard he was stopped while driving a Renault Megane on Sheffield Road in Chapel-en-le-Frith on February 22 and found to have 83 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates were told he was already disqualified from driving and had no insurance. 

He pleaded guilty to all of the charges.

Magistrates banned him from the road for a further three years and four months, plus ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £122 victim surcharge.

Broke Covid-19 regulations

Breaching coronavirus regulations has landed Daniel Higgins a £217 court bill.

Tameside magistrates found the 26-year-old, of Holebottom, Ashton, guilty of the charge in his absence, as he was not before the court.

Magistrates were told the offence had happened on April 11 and fined him £100, plus ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

Sentenced for a catalogue of offences

A Dukinfield woman faced a catalogue of offences when she appeared before Tameside magistrates.

Shelby Gratty, 21, of Oaktree Drive, faced five counts of sending a series of offensive or indecent videos via social media between May and September last year.

She also faced two charges of harassment and sending seven hoax calls to the police between May and December last year, plus causing £200 damage to a window in December last year.

She was issued with a curfew order, meaning she must remain at her address for 13 weeks between the hours of 8pm and 8am, plus ordered to pay a total of £300 compensation. Magistrates also issued her with a restraining order, meaning she must have no contact with a certain individual.

Assault on police officer

A Mossley woman who assaulted a police constable and was threatening and abusive has been fined a total of £180 by Tameside magistrates for the offences.

Danielle Francis, 32, of The Cheshires, admitted both offences which had happened on June 13 in the town.

She was ordered to pay a £34 victim surcharge.

Stolen alcohol valued at more than £800

A young woman from Audenshaw has been given a curfew order by Tameside magistrates for the theft of alcohol valued at more than £800.

Tia Malhi, 20, of Hobson Crescent, pleaded guilty to taking alcohol valued at £400 from Morrisons in Cheadle on March 5, and then taking booze again from the same store worth just over £211 on March 16.

She also admitted a further charge of taking alcohol from Sainsbury’s in Halifax on March 12 worth £214.

She was given a six weeks curfew order, meaning she must remain at her address   between the hours of 7pm to 7am for the duration of the order.

Magistrates ordered her to pay £200 compensation, £250 court costs and a £90 victim surcharge.

Banned for drink driving 

Tameside magistrates have banned Anthony Leggard from the road for 23 months for a charge of drink driving.

The 61-year-old, of Ollersett Avenue, New Mills, had pleaded guilty to being more than two times over the legal drink drive limit when driving along the M60 on August 30 this  year.

Magistrates heard he was found to have 92 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit being 35.

He was fined £120, plus ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by 23 weeks if a driving course is completed.

Another police officer assaulted  

Tameside magistrates handed John Stockman a two year conditional discharge for assaulting a police officer.

The court heard the incident had happened on June 14 in Bury.

The 58-year-old, of Mill Lane, Denton, initially denied the charge but later changed his plea to guilty.

He was ordered to pay £100 compensation, plus pay court costs of £175 and a victim surcharge of £22.

Drink driver was in possession of drugs

Tameside magistrates have banned Ashton man Ryan Shaw from the road for 12 months for being over the drink drive limit.

The 25-year-old, of Hilton Crescent, pleaded guilty to the offence after being stopped on October 16 in the town and found to have 53 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He was fined £60, plus ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by three months if a driving course is successfully completed.

Magistrates fined him a further £60 after he also admitted being in possession of two snap bags of cocaine.

The court ordered the drugs be forfeited and destroyed.

Not enough care

Driving without due care and attention landed Mohammad Arif before Tameside magistrates.

He pleaded guilty to the offence which had happened on August 24 on Ashton Road with the junction of Park Lane in Oldham.

The 56-year-old, of Stockport Road, Ashton, was fined £166, plus ordered to pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £34.

His driving licence was endorsed with five penalty points.

Disqualified for being over drug drive limit

Denton driver Andrea Lloyd has been banned from the road for 18 months for an offence of drug driving.

The 46-year-old, of Rosedale Court, Denton, initially denied the charge but later changed her plea to guilty.

She had been stopped in November last year, the court was told.

Magistrates fined her a total of £180, plus ordered her to pay £150 court costs and a victim surcharge of £32.

250 hours of unpaid work

Jack Hunt must carry out 250 hours unpaid work and has been banned from the road for 18 months for taking a vehicle without consent.

The 24-year-old, of Werneth Avenue, Hyde, pleaded guilty to the offence which had happened on April 27 this year.

Tameside magistrates heard the car had been driven dangerously and damage caused to the vehicle.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £200 compensation plus £85 court costs and £85 victim surcharge.

Charged with burglary

A man has been charged in connection with a burglary at Clarendon Mall in Hyde last Friday.

Anthony Blackley, 42, of Barnwell Close, Audenshaw, has appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and was charged with burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

Parents fined

More parents have been hit with hefty fines by Tameside magistrates for failing to ensure their children regularly attend school.

Fines of up to £440 plus additional court costs of more than £130 were ordered in some instances.
