The ever popular Willow Wood Hospice Midnight Wander returns on Friday, September 11, by public demand.
The 10k sponsored walk is an essential part of Willow Wood’s fundraising and this year will be more important than ever.
However, under the current circumstances it is appreciated there may some concerns about safety and Anthony Lord, head of income generation, has addressed those.
“We asked our supporters earlier in the year whether they would prefer a socially distanced meet-up followed by the walkers setting off in their social bubbles, or a virtual walk doing their own 10k anytime during September,” he said.
“The answer was a resounding vote for the first option, so that’s what we’re doing.
“The Midnight Wander will set off and return to Astley Sports Village in Dukinfield, which has a huge sports hall and extensive pitches outside, so there will be ample room to maintain distancing.
“The majority of participants come along with a partner, in a group or as a family, and we’ll be asking our wanderers to set off in their bubble and be aware of other groups along the way. Of course, we will be monitoring the situation carefully and will keep you informed if any changes are necessary.”
The very first Midnight Wander took to the streets of Tameside in 2007 and after a short rest in 2017 and 2018, returned very successfully last year with one or two changes.
Initially it was ladies only and it really was a great girls’ night out, but now the whole family is invited and you can even bring your dog along for a midnight walk!
However the elements that make it so special remain the same. Firstly, you must wear pink. A T-shirt is included in the registration fee, but why not go the whole way and wear pink accessories – Stetsons, wigs, feather boas, tutus are all favourites and Willow Wood will have merchandise available soon.
A hot breakfast sandwich is included and always very welcome after walking 10k.
Most importantly, of course, the Midnight Wander is a fundraiser.
“Every day we need £7,650 to continue to provide our loving, specialised care for our patients and their families. That’s nearly £320 every hour!” said Anthony.
“By taking part you can really help local people when they need it the most.
