A total of nine 15m-high 5G masts could soon be erected across Tameside following a series of applications being submitted to the council.

IX Wireless Limited plans to put up the masts in various locations across the borough, all of which would be 15m in height and be accompanied by cabinets for cables and electronic communications apparatus. IX claimed that this will deliver a range of low-cost, high-quality broadband packages with guaranteed speeds of between 40Mb and 300Mb.

A proportion of the network coverage will go towards helping connect people to the internet who otherwise could not afford it in the areas of Ashton, Droylsden, Audenshaw and Hyde.

While its network is in its relative infancy, IX has rollout plans to expand its network, initially with a focus on the North West and, thereafter, countrywide. Initial roll-out phases also focus on urban areas.

This is the list of locations the 15m masts are planned:

  • Opposite the drive of 111 Lumb Lane, Audenshaw
  • Opposite rear garden of 72/74 Kershaw Street, Droylsden
  • To left of lamppost near 7 Hoppet Lane on the corner of Hawthorn Road, Droylsden
  • Across from Daisy Nook House, Ashton
  • Adjacent to Carr Street car park, Ashton
  • Opposite 42 Henry Street, Hyde
  • On Rydal Avenue near car parking area, Hyde
  • Junction of Granville Street and Stamford Square, Ashton
  • Next to car park on Burlington Street, Ashton

IX is committed to dedicating 20 per cent of its network bandwidth capacity towards its Digital Social Inclusion initiatives, aimed at addressing the divide between those with and without internet access.

A planning statement read: “According to OFCOM2, digital exclusion among UK adults can be attributed to three main factors: access, ability, and affordability. These three aspects are often intertwined and encompass a range of issues related to digital exclusion, such as insufficient access to devices, lack of skills and knowledge, and access to affordable broadband.

“The focus of the Applicant’s “Internet for All” programme is in tackling access and affordability issues which are key in addressing the digital divide, particularly with over 2 million homes experiencing affordability issues with internet access as of October 2021.”
