Sports journalist Katie gears up for Manchester Marathon

Our very own Katie Catherall will be stepping out for her toughest challenge yet this weekend - the Manchester Marathon.

Katie has been gearing up for the big event on Sunday (16 April) for some time, with at least three months of intense training in preparation.

Our award-winning sporting superstar from Stalybridge started running as a child, inspired by her mum, and her interest accelerated during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Katie, whose enduring passion for sport has developed from a young age, has ran many races before but this will be her first ever marathon.

She will be completing the 26.2 mile course around a city that means a lot to her for a local charity that holds an equally warm place in her heart - The Believe and Achieve Trust.

'I can't wait to step out on that start line'

“Training for the Manchester Marathon has been an immense challenge,” said Katie. “I’ve ran multiple races before, but a full marathon is a huge step up.

“It’s been a challenge trying to juggle my usual working life alongside training for the 26.2 mile distance, but the tiredness and aching limbs is all just part of the journey.

“I’ve not set myself a time goal for the marathon, as my biggest goal is to raise as much money as possible for The Believe and Achieve Trust.

“This charity is remarkable. As a sport enthusiast, I love the work they do to make sport accessible for all, irregardless of disabilities.

“They also raise awareness of meningitis, in memory of Alex Williams. Alison, Alex’s mum, is truly incredible and the charity has been so supportive throughout my journey.

“I can’t wait to step out on that start line and feel the support of the crowd. Manchester is my home city and I’m so proud to be completing this huge challenge there.”

The adidas Manchester Marathon is the fourth largest in Europe and the UK’s flattest major marathon.
