Stalybridge catering students cook up a feast for the community

Catering students at Copley Academy in Stalybridge are going the extra mile this winter to ensure everyone in the community is looked after.

Joining forces with St Paul’s Church, the students have been working through their spare time to prepare soup for those who may otherwise go without.

Their efforts are part of the ‘Place of Welcome’ event at the church, an initiative that aims to keep locals fed and warm this festive season.

With times becoming increasingly tough for so many within the borough, acts of kindness like this are invaluable.

The ‘Place of Welcome’ event runs every Thursday at St Paul’s Church between 9am and 5pm and gives locals the opportunity to meet their neighbours whilst enjoying a free soup and warm drink.

Reverend Emma Handley says she loves to see locals meeting one another and believes the community should do more to combine their skills.

On this note, she approached Copley Academy to see if they would like to lend a helping hand, to which they gladly agreed.

From here, the church organised vegetable donations to Copley, who then work to prepare and make the soup.

As well as carrying out a kind act for the community, teacher Angela Orr-McCook believes this teaches students key life skills.

“It is important that we actually nurture these students so they can take these skills with them when they leave us.

“It teaches them the importance of giving something back to the community, and if they value the community then they will thrive in their adult life.

“Our students come week, after week and give up their free time to make the soup, which is amazing,” she said.
