Food bank founder and Stalybridge community hero Steven Barton has been officially presented with his British Empire Medal.
Steven, who operates ‘Barty’s Community Food Bank’ in Stalybridge, was presented with the honour by Sharman Birtles, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, in a ceremony at Stalybridge Celtic last Friday.
Steven was named in last year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List as a recipient of the BEM for his selfless service to help families and children living in poverty.
A modest Steven stated: “The award is for Stalybridge and the people... it is probably the proudest day of my life. Thank you everyone for helping me, the community for your support - it is so appreciated.”
Steven said the award was extra special as members of the Stalybridge community had nominated him.
He has worked for many, many years, totally driven to help others and providing for families who otherwise would have nothing, ultimately culminating in the creation of ‘Barty’s Community Food Bank’ located alongside Stalybridge North Labour Club.
His campaigns continue and he is already collecting toys for his Christmas appeal for those most in need.
Steven said: “Every year we collect new toys, as it’s the children that we prioritise in everything and we visit schools, families, hospitals, centres, care homes, plus support the NSPCC, women’s centre and women’s refuge.
“If anyone needs help this Christmas, please just message me,” he added.
Items can be delivered direct to Steven at the food bank - the food bank itself is open Wednesday to Friday between 9.15am-11.15am or email stevenbarton70@hotmail.co.uk or send a message to his Facebook page, Steven Barton BEM.
