Community champion Ken Morris is offering two guided tours of the Edwardian Walk in Stamford Park in August to mark the park’s recent 150th anniversary.
The historical guided walk of Stamford Park, Stalybridge, was developed by Ken working with Tameside Council using Community Champion Funding last summer.
Ken used his collection of Edwardian postcards featuring the venue for the project. By following the eight display boards around Stamford Park, visitors can learn how it was then and now from the photographs and informative historical notes.
The walk has been designed to share the flagship Tameside park’s culture and history with the community with the added benefits of offering exercise and well-being.
A booklet explaining the park’s origins and development through detailed maps and images accompanies the walk; this can be downloaded for free online. There is also a children’s activity sheet, to provide fun as well as education, for families enjoying the walk and park, which will be available to pick up from the Highfield Pavilion.
The first guided walk will take place on Wednesday 9 August, 12pm – 2pm, with the second taking place on Thursday 24 August, 12pm – 2pm.
For both guided walks please meet at the Highfield Pavilion, Stamford Park where participants will be welcomed and introduced to Ken. Everyone is welcome to join in and please note there is an accessible route to avoid the steps.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Climate Emergency & Environmental Services, Cllr Denise Ward said: “With recently celebrating Stamford Park’s 150th anniversary it is lovely to reflect and delve into the history that runs through the Edwardian Walk. I would like to thank Ken for volunteering to share his knowledge, which allows others to learn and enjoy its heritage.”
