Tameside Council is asking communities across the borough to 'bring out the bunting' to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee later this year.
The royal event - which marks an incredible 70 years since she ascended the throne - will be over the weekend of 2 to 5 June.
Residents are being encouraged to get together to put up the bunting, prepare the cakes and sandwiches, and raise a toast to Her Majesty.
As an extra incentive to get everyone involved, the first two streets to successfully apply to host a party on Thursday 2 June will win a cycle skills activity. The next three will get a free crown crafts pack to help them celebrate.
The council has also simplified the process for closing roads. There’s no cost involved and a guide has been launched with ideas for games, quizzes and organisational tips to make sure your party is a success.
Councillor Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member for culture and heritage, said: “I’m expecting the platinum jubilee to be a great event. After all we’ve had to miss out on because of covid – including the VE Day 75th anniversary street parties in 2020 – people are in the mood for a celebration.
“Street parties are such a brilliant way to raise community spirit. With us all living more independent lives, people can often feel isolated within their community. Street parties are the perfect opportunity to bring everyone together in a happy event where new friendships can be formed.
“The simplified procedure makes it much easier for residents to close their roads and I hope lots and lots of them will get involved in this historic celebration.”
The street party guide is available online at www.tameside.gov.uk/streetparties or can be sent to you if you call 0780 300 6172. The deadline to apply to close your road for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is Sunday 17 April.
