Tameside Scouts mark St George's Day

More than 100 Scouts, from nine Scout groups, took part in Sunday's St George's Day parade through Ashton, alongside Ashton Brass Band.

In the UK, members use the event to reaffirm their promise and acknowledge the Scout Law in a national act of dedication.

Baden Powell selected St. George as the patron saint of Scouts due to the tale of his triumph over adversity in the shape of a dragon. This choice was made in recognition of St. George's truthfulness, dedication to duty, brave heart, noble spirit, and commitment to aiding others, all of which are qualities synonymous with Scouts.

The Parade started in Ashton town centre before heading up past the market to Albion Church for the service.

Vicar Jean Combs and Freya Jones, Scout Leader of the 339th Droyslden Scout group, led the service in which all North Tameside Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders renewed their Promises. Various awards were presented by district commissioner Andy Morton.

The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Tafheen Sharif, said she enjoyed the Parade, talking to the Scouts and seeing the new 14th Scout Group based at the Ashton Central Mosque.
