Tameside workers can have a free NHS health check at their workplace

Workers in Tameside will be able to have a free health check-up at work as part of a new government scheme.

The NHS initiative aims to highlight deadly conditions including diabetes, heart and kidney disease and strokes and aims to save thousands of lives.

More than 14 million people will be involved in the workplace trials which start next month.

Seven local authorities in Greater Manchester, including Tameside, will get £600,000 to fund up to 14,600 check-ups.

Nationally, 48 local authorities in England have been picked to take part in the £6.6m project.

Anyone who is aged 40 to 74, does not already have certain pre-existing conditions is eligible for a free check-up every five years. The checks usually involve measuring height, weight and waist, blood pressure and cholesterol tests.

Denton MP Andrew Gwynne, who is the Minister for Public Health and Prevention, said: "We know so many deadly diseases can be avoided if we seek help in enough time.

“That’s why we’re working to improve access to treatment while also taking steps to address the preventable causes of cardiovascular disease. This innovative new programme is an important step towards community-focused healthcare and supporting economic and productivity through improving health, shifting the focus from treatment to prevention, easing the strain on the NHS and helping people to live well for longer.”

People aged 40 to 74 who have not received an NHS Health Check in the last five years can speak to their GP or local council public health team to find out if they are eligible and where to get checked.
