Travel chaos on roads and 'Do Not Travel' notice for trains

Wintry weather has forced the closure of several roads and disrupted public transport around the High Peak and Tameside.

Despite gritters and ploughers working at full capacity throughout the night and into the morning, some highways are still impassable:

  • The A54/A537 Cat and Fiddle between Buxton and Macclesfield

  • A53 Axe Edge

  • A57 Snake Pass

  • A628 Woodhead Pass

  • A6024 Holme Moss

  • A5004 Long Hill Road between Whaley Bridge and Buxton

The area’s farming contractors are also on the roads trying to keep rural roads as clear as possible.

The High Peak 199 bus route between Manchester Airport, Stockport and Buxton is running again after most early morning services were cancelled due to snow.

However, it will avoid Fairfield all day Sunday because of the potentially dangerous conditions.

The Transpeak bus is running, but will not venture into Harpur Hill, Chelmorton, Taddington or Ashford in the Water.

The 62 from Buxton to Castleton and the 58 between Buxton and Macclesfield are both suspended until further notice.

Meanwhile, the launch of the new Bee Network buses in Greater Manchester have also been disrupted by snow and ice:

  • The 201 will start and end at Hyde bus station, leaving out Hattersley and Godley

  • The 231 will omit St Albans Avenue

  • The 237 from Ashton will terminate at Stalybridge instead of Glossop

  • The 350 from Ashton to Oldham will avoid Delph and Hey Farm in Micklehurst

  • The 389 Ashton to Astley circular will not visit Springs Lane

The 335 between Ashton and Denton, 342 Hyde to Backbower Circular, 387 Ashton to Hyde and the 396 from Ashton to Middleton are all experiencing delays and cancellations.

On the trains, Northern have issued a ‘Do Not Travel’ notice, with cancellations expected on all routes.

The tip at Waterswallows will also close for the day, although its equivalent at Melandra Road in Glossop is open after an hour-long delay.
