Two men were arrested on suspicion of money laundering in Hyde.
Greater Manchester Police said they responded to an incident on Monday 29 August that was initially reported as a man with a knife on Ann Street in the town.
When officers attended, they stopped a vehicle on Manchester Road just as it pulled out of Ann Street.
Two men were "apprehended" and their vehicle was searched, GMP Tameside South and West's team said.
Police discovered a bag containing a "large quantity" of money suspected to have been laundered.
The two men, aged 25 and 30, were subsequently arrested and taken into police custody for questioning. They have since been released under investigation.
