Ultra Challenge? Bring it on again!

A Hadfield couple have raised £2,000 for Willow Wood Hospice after completing a gruelling 48km challenge.

Hayley Kelsall, 26, and her partner Louis Worthington, 27, conquered the Peak District Ultra Challenge on July 7, battling tough weather conditions to reach the finishing line in Bakewell.

The duo took park in memory of Hayley’s mum, Sharon, who received end-of-life care at Willow Wood in Ashton before her death in May 2023.

“During the years prior she had many health complications, however she faced it all with strength and bravery,” said Hayley. “She was the life of the party and is truly missed by everyone.

“Thanks to Willow Wood Hospice we were able to be by her side and she was surrounded by loved ones in her final days.

“We cannot thank the staff enough for the care my mum and the rest of our family received during and after her passing.”

Willow Wood needs more than £3 million per year to operate, with just 20% of that that coming in Government funding.

The intrepid pair plan to tackle the course again and raise more money next year.

“It went really well and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, despite the bad weather,” Hayley said. “The weather made it a bit more challenging, however knowing it was for a good cause pulled us through. We are hoping to do another one - maybe even slightly longer - next year.”

The Peak District Ultra Challenge has several variants, including a relatively short 10-mile loop, all the way up to an arduous 100km circuit.

Next year’s event takes place on the weekend of June 28 and 29 and expects around 3,000 participants.
