Mossley Litter Bugs have been out and about clearing the town of more grot spots.
The hardy bunch of volunteers tackled the woods at Egmont Street in Bottom Mossley.
The area has become blighted by rubbish, polystyrene and plastic, which often becomes stuck in the ‘plastic trap’ in the river in the Scout area.
Mossley Litter Bugs was set up to save Mossley from the deluge of litter and graffiti by working together as a community.
Rachel Summerscales from the group said she was dismayed by the amount of plastic being discarded in the area.
She said: “The sad thing about all of this plastic pollution is that it’s really easily avoided. Obviously if people didn’t drop their litter it wouldn’t enter the water courses in the first place, but the problem starts before that.
“If our local takeaways committed to using cardboard packaging instead of polystyrene it would reduce the problem. If the government brought in the Single Use Plastic ban the businesses would not be able to buy the polystyrene packaging in the first place.
“At the present time though we have a huge issue here in Mossley, and everywhere, with plastic in waterways which of course eventually ends up in the ocean endangering marine life... surely we can do better as a town?”
