A deer which was trapped in metal railings in Hyde had to be rescued by the RSPCA and the fire service.

Animal Rescue Officer Steve Wickham was sent to the scene after a member of the public reported seeing the trapped roe deer in the metal fence surrounding a house in Mottram Road at about 9am last Thursday (30 September).

When Steve arrived at the scene, he could see the deer was terrified by her predicament but was uninjured. 

He realised he would need the help of the fire service to help free her and a crew from Greater Manchester attended the scene and used a bar spreader to release the deer. 

Steve said: “This deer had obviously been running in the area at night and thought she could get through the railings in the gates but misjudged the gap. 

“As she tried to go forward she was unable to move as the metal had trapped her between her hips and her waist. She was obviously terrified but luckily she was spotted and we were called to help.

“We tend to be called to help quite a lot of deer trapped in this way and we have to be careful not to cause them stress and so we release them calmly and as quickly as possible. 

“Once the fire service had widened the railings I was able to gently guide her forward and it was great to see her run back into the wild. Hopefully she will have learnt her lesson from this and not try to go through railings again!”

The RSPCA say anyone who encounters a wild animal trapped should not try and free it themselves, as they can scratch, kick and bite when frightened - particularly if they are injured. The advice is to keep a safe distance and call the RSPCA cruelty and advice line on 0300 1234 999.
