Wherever you live - in the High Peak, Tameside or Oldham - here are all the details you need about which bin to put out and when over the Christmas and New Year period.

High Peak

There will be no bin collections on Monday 27 December, Tuesday 28 December and Monday 3 January, while bin rounds throughout the festive period have been rearranged to accommodate the changes.

Green-lidded bin collections will be suspended until the New Year. 

Executive Councillor for Climate Change, Environment and Community Safety, Jean Todd, said: “We’re all busy enough at Christmas without having to remember any changes to bin collections as well – so we’ve made it quick and easy to check via our website.

“The online bin collection calendar has been updated with the changes to rounds over the festive period and you can check when your collections are by simply entering your postcode and selecting your address.

“Our website also includes information about what goes in your bins just in case anyone needs a reminder.”

Bins must be presented by 6am on collection day.

Although the green-lidded bin will not be collected over Christmas, residents are advised to continue putting all cooked and uncooked food waste (including vegetable peelings and bones) in their bins in preparation for the rounds to begin again.

Tameside 

Tameside bin crews will continue to work hard over the festive season but collection days will change for some households.

There will be no brown bin collections at all across the borough from Monday 27 December until Friday 7 January. 

Also, anyone due a collection on the bank holidays – Monday 27 December, Tuesday 28 December or Monday 3 January – should check the list below for their new date. All other collections should run as normal.

If you live in an area where a trial of three-weekly collections is taking place, residents should refer to the letter they will have received.

Monday 27 December

If you are due a green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Wednesday, December 29. If you are due a black (recycling) or a blue (paper) bin collection, it will be collected on Friday, December 31.

Tuesday 28 December 

If you are due a green bin collection, it will be collected on Thursday, December 30. If you are due a black or a blue bin collection, it will be collected on Tuesday 4 January. 

Wednesday 29 December to Friday 31 December 

Normal collections will take place, excluding brown bins.

Monday 3 January

If you are due a black bin collection, it will be collected on Wednesday 5 January. If you are due a green bin collection, it will be collected on Thursday 6 January. If you are due a blue bin collection, it will be collected on Friday 7 January.

Real Christmas trees can be left out with your brown bin for recycling from Monday 10 January. The council will collect any additional recyclable waste which is left out with your black or blue recycling bins in a clear or labelled bag.

People can also download the council's bin app for updates and alerts for their Christmas waste and recycling collection arrangements.

“By recycling more we can all do our bit to keep waste to a minimum and help the environment. By parking cars considerately we can help waste vehicles gain access to all roads and bins.

Oldham 

There will be no changes – weather permitting – to bin collections over Christmas and the New Year due to Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day all falling on the weekend.

If your bins are due for collection on the Bank holidays – Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December and Monday 3 January – put them out for collection as normal.

After the festive period, Oldham residents can get rid of their Christmas tree in several ways.

You can put it in your green bin – just chop it into small pieces, remove the wooden block from the base of the tree as this is too big to be composted, and take off any lights and decorations.

Alternatively, take it to your local tip or to one of the following recycling ‘drop off’ points from 29 December until 31 January:

• Higher Memorial Park (car park), Joseph Street, Failsworth (open dawn until dusk)

• Royton Park (car park) off Bleasdale Street, Royton. Anytime access

• Werneth Park (car park) off Frederick Street, Werneth (open dawn until dusk)

• Churchill Playing Fields (car park), Wellington Road, Greenfield. Anytime access.

All Christmas cards, wrapping paper and cardboard packaging can be recycled using blue bins or recycling bags.
