Countless cases of drink driving charges, abuse carried out at the Manchester City ground and fines for possession of cocaine have been among the recent cases heard at Tameside Magistrates' Court.

Threat of jail

Tameside magistrates have given a Hyde man a suspended jail term and banned him from the road for three years.

Christian Pearson, 48, of High Street, pleaded guilty to being in possession of cocaine, failing to provide a specimen of breath when suspected of having committed a driving offence, driving without due care and attention and failing to stop.

The offences all related to an incident on January 18 this year. Magistrates handed him a 12 weeks jail term, suspended for one year.

They also ordered him to pay court costs of £250 and a victim surcharge of £128 plus instructed the cocaine be forfeited and destroyed.

Covid fines

Tameside magistrates have fined dozens more people for breaching Covid restrictions last November and December.

Hefty fines of £320 up to £1,760 were handed out with offenders also having to pay associated court costs of a further £250.

Out of order

Michael Marsden, 29, of Peak Bank, Romiley, was fined £120 by Tameside magistrates for failing to comply with court orders.

He admitted being in breach of previous orders and was also ordered to pay £85 court costs.

Banned driver assaulted officer

Disqualified driver Ross Rickets was stopped motoring along Arundel Street in Ashton, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 22-year-old appeared before the court charged with driving while disqualified and assaulting a police officer, namely kicking him. The charges related to an incident on August 4 last year.

Magistrates handed him a four months jail term, suspended for a year, and gave him a 16 weeks curfew order, meaning he must remain at his address between the hours of 7pm and 7am for the duration of the order.

He must pay £200 court costs and a victim surcharge of £128.

His address was given as Oldham Road, Newton Heath.

In possession of cocaine

Tameside magistrates fined Ashton man Declan Lalley a total of £280 and disqualified him from driving for 12 months.

The 23-year-old, of Beech Mount, admitted charges of failing to provide a specimen when believed to have committed a driving offence and being in possession of cocaine.

The charges related to an incident on February 9 this year in Manchester.

He must also pay £300 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Magistrates ordered the cocaine be forfeited and destroyed.

Stole spirits and cigarettes

Manchester man Adam Cloran has been handed a 20 weeks jail term, suspended for two years by Tameside magistrates.

The 25-year-old admitted stealing spirits and cigarettes from Denton worth £869 on December 15 last year.

He was issued with a curfew order meaning he must remain at his Hewitt Close address between the hours of 7pm and 7am for a duration of 16 weeks.

He was also ordered to pay £430 compensation, plus £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Out of order

Failing to comply with court orders cost Daniel Newhouse a fine of £60 at Tameside magistrates.

The 30-year-old, of Carrhill Road, Mossley, admitted breaching court orders and was also instructed to pay £60 court costs.

Stephen Hunt, 25, of Werneth Avenue, Hyde, was ordered to pay the same fine and costs, also for being in breach of previous court orders.

Suspended jail sentence

Tameside magistrates have handed Droylsden man Darren Curran a 26 weeks jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.

The 40-year-old, of Chesterton Grove, pleaded guilty to a charge of  possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

The charge related to an incident in November 2019 in Oldham.

He was ordered to carry out 220 hours unpaid work plus pay a victim surcharge of £122.

Magistrates also banned him from the road for 12 months and fined him £350 for an offence of drug driving.

The 40-year-old, of Chesterton Grove, was stopped on the M60 at Bury on June 26 last year and found to be over the drug drive limit.

He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs.

Restraint order for harassment

Benjamin McKeever has been issued with a restraining order by Tameside magistrates for a charge of harassment in August last year.

The 30-year-old, of Eastwood Avenue, Droylsden, had initially denied the charge but later changed his plea to guilty.

He was given a 12 months conditional discharge and must pay £150 court costs and a £22 victim surcharge.

Found guilty of assault

Richard Eccles, 42, of Fairfield Square, Droylsden, must carry out 100 hours unpaid work.

Appearing at Tameside magistrates he had denied a charge of assaulting an individual in Droylsden on December 19 last year.

However he was found guilty of the offence and ordered to pay £620 court costs plus a £95 victim surcharge.

Too threatening

A Manchester man who was threatening and abusive in Tameside in November last year has been given a 12 months conditional discharge by Tameside magistrates.

Blessmore Chasakara, 23, of Overlea Drive, admitted the offence and was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £21.

Abusive at City ground

Mark Rosbottom was threatening and abusive towards others at Manchester City football club in December last year, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 43-year-old, of The Clough, Ashton, pleaded guilty to the offence and was ordered to carry out 40 hours unpaid work.

He must also pay £85 court costs and a £90 victim surcharge.

Drink and drug driving charges

Tameside Magistrates’ Court has dealt with a raft of driving-related offences, mostly for drink and drug driving, including the following listed below.

• Fifty-year-old Heathcliffe Dunning  was banned from the road for four years by Tameside magistrates for an offence of drink driving.

The Denton man, of Rose Hill, pleaded guilty to the charge after being stopped on Neal Avenue in Ashton on June 18 this year and found to have 64 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates handed him a five weeks curfew order, meaning he must remain at his address between the hours of 7pm and 7am each night for the duration of the order.

He must pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £95.

• Tameside magistrates banned Bradley Quinlan from driving for 12 months for being over the drink drive limit.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge after being stopped behind the wheel of a BMW on Oldham Road, Ashton, on June 13 this year.

He was found to have 43 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates fined him £233 and ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by three months if a driving course is successfully completed.

His address was given as Church Street, Royton.

• A Stockport motorist stopped in Ashton on Christmas Eve last year was found to be over the legal drug drive limit, Tameside magistrates heard.

Appearing before the court, Phillip Hibbert admitted the offence after being stopped on Hertford Street and found to be over the legal limit.

The 33-year-old, of Rostrevor Road, Adswood, was disqualified from driving for 12 months, fined £106 plus ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

• Tameside magistrates banned Garry McGann from the road for two years for an offence of drug driving. The 53-year-old, of Park Street, Stalybridge, pleaded guilty to the offence after being stopped on Lord Sheldon Way in Ashton on January 5 this year.

He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

• James Mayers was two times over the drink drive limit when stopped driving through Ashton.

Tameside magistrates heard he was stopped on Richmond Street on June 17 this year and found to have 76 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates fined him £440 and banned him from the road for 20 months.

He must also pay £85 court costs and a £44 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by 20 weeks if a drink driving course is satisfactorily completed.

His address was given as Grange Street, Failsworth.

• Ashton driver Daniel Nicholls was stopped in Stalybridge and found to be over the drink drive limit.

The 37-year-old, of Mellor Road, pleaded guilty to the charge after being stopped on Wilmoor Wood Close and found to have 93 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35. Magistrates banned him from the road for 25 months and fined him £270. He must also pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by 25 weeks if a driving course is successfully completed.

• Drug driver Alex Jones has been banned from the road for 12 months.

The 21-year-old, of Lakeside Avenue, Ashton, pleaded guilty to the offence after being stopped on Stockport Road, Ashton, on Boxing Day last year and found to be over the drug drive limit.

At Tameside magistrates he was given a 12 months conditional discharge, disqualified from driving for 12 months, plus ordered to pay £28 court costs and a £22 victim surcharge.

• A motorist who failed to provide a breath specimen when suspected of having committed a driving offence has been banned from the road for two years.

Nicholas Ryan, of Higher Tame Street, Stalybridge, admitted the offence which happened on June 13 this year.

Tameside magistrates ordered the 27-year-old to carry out 120 hours unpaid work, plus pay court costs of £85 and a £95 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by 24 weeks if a course is successfully completed.

• Mossley motorist Jack Royle was banned from driving for two years by Tameside magistrates for being over the drink drive limit.

The 25-year-old, of Stockport Road, admitted the offence after being stopped on March 6 this year on Corporation Road, Denton.

He was found to have 216 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine, exceeding the prescribed legal limit of 107.

He pleaded guilty and was given a four weeks curfew order, meaning he must remain at his address between the hours of 7pm and 7am for the duration of the order.

He must pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

• Simon Cambell, 47, of Lees Road, Gorton, has been banned from the road for 12 months by Tameside magistrates for an offence of drug driving.

He had initially denied the offence but later changed his plea to guilty. The charge related to an incident back in November 2019.

Magistrates fined him £472, plus ordered him to pay £200 court costs and a £52 victim surcharge.

• Tameside magistrates have banned Michelle Forbes from the road for 12 months.

The 38-year-old, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to a charge of drug driving along Manchester Road, Denton, on September 6 last year.

She was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
