Who's been in court recently?

From carrying a knife in public and assaulting a police officer to stealing from charity and breaking into a golf club, here's the latest round-up from Tameside Magistrates' Court...

Disqualified driver Majid Mahmood was caught behind the wheel driving in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 44-year-old, of Union Street, Ashton, pleaded guilty to the offence, which had happened back in November 2017, plus driving without insurance.

Appearing for sentencing at Tameside magistrates he was given a 12 weeks prison term, suspended for 12 months, plus ordered to carry out 60 hours unpaid work.

He was disqualified from driving for a further 18 months and must pay £85 court costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Magistrates imposed the suspended jail term after hearing the offence had happened within a short period of time of the original disqualification.

Tameside magistrates have jailed Aaron McGinn for a total of nine weeks.

The Ashton man pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a dash camera in Oldham, carrying an offensive weapon in public - namely a knuckle duster - and failing to surrender to custody. The first two offences related to an incident on January 28.

Magistrates jailed him, having heard the offences had happened while he was subject of a previous court order. He admitted being in breach of the order.

He must pay £85 court costs and a £122 victim surcharge and magistrates ordered the knuckle duster be forfeited and destroyed.

The 36-year-old’s address was given as Diamond Close.

A 25-year-old denied a charge of being over the drink drive limit when he appeared before Tameside magistrates.

However, the court found Juman Ali, of Eden Street, Oldham, guilty of the offence.

Magistrates heard he had been stopped on Featherstall Road, Oldham, on October 14 last year and found to have 44 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

The court fined him £250 for the offence and ordered him to pay £570 court costs. He must also pay a £32 victim surcharge.

He was banned from the road for 14 months although the disqualification can be reduced by some 11 months if a driving course is successfully undertaken.

Jason McTighe has been jailed by Tameside magistrates for 14 days.

He admitted breaking the conditions of a criminal behaviour order by entering stores in Oldham he was forbidden from visiting.

He also admitted taking tins of tuna worth £45 from Home Bargains in Oldham on January 7 this year.

Magistrates said the offence was aggravated by the defendant’s record of previous offending and also ordered him to pay £45 compensation. 

His address was given as Drakes Close, Oldham.

An Oldham man who stole hundreds of pounds from a Stalybridge store has been given a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £888 compensation.

Jonathan Pisani, 44, of Fairway Road, Holts, Oldham, had initially denied the theft from the OV Wines store on Market Street in Stalybridge.

But he later changed his plea to guilty.

Appearing before Tameside magistrates he was given the discharge and ordered to pay the compensation for the offence which had happened back in June 2018.

Daniel Horsfall was caught carrying a small broken kitchen knife in public, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 22-year-old, of Ashley Close, Shaw, initially denied the charge but later changed his plea to guilty.

The court heard he had been found with the knife - deemed an offensive weapon - on Alcester Street in Oldham on December 29 last year.

Magistrates gave him a two years conditional discharge, plus ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £21 victim surcharge, plus ordered the knife be forfeited and destroyed.

Tameside magistrates remanded Daron Pollitt-Smith in custody until later in the month.

The 36-year-old, of no fixed abode, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting another man in Ashton on February 1 this year.

He did indicate pleas of guilty to being threatening and abusive towards a police officer on the same date in Ashton, and to the same charge relating to an incident in Wigan last December.

Magistrates remanded him in custody to appear before the court again on March 23.

Roy Combs has been fined £470 by Tameside magistrates for a charge of assault.

The 51-year-old, of Ashton Road, Oldham, initially denied the offence relating to an incident on June 14 last year in Oldham, but he later changed his plea to guilty.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £500 compensation plus pay a victim surcharge of £47. He must also pay court costs of £150.

John Bainbridge has been fined £100 by Tameside magistrates for being threatening and abusive.

The 59-year-old, of Bury Street, Mossley, pleaded guilty to the charge relating to an incident on July 17 last year.

He must also pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £32.

Jordan Mort denied assaulting a police officer in an incident dating back more than a year to January 2019.

But Tameside Magistrates’ Court found him guilty of the offence which the court heard had happened in Ashton.

They issued the 23-year-old of Ann Street, Denton, with a curfew order, meaning he must remain at his address from 7pm to 7am each night for eight weeks.

He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation, plus £100 court costs and a victim surcharge of £85.

Tameside magistrates have jailed Jake Casey for 12 weeks for breaching court orders.

The 22-year-old, of Haggate Road, Royton, admitted failing to comply with the requirements of the order and was jailed for his persistent failure and flagrant disregard for the orders.

Magistrates heard he was subject to a criminal behaviour disorder. He must pay a victim surcharge of £122.

• Cameron Hall failed without reasonable excuse to comply with the requirements of a community order, Tameside magistrates were told.

The 25-year-old, of Ambleside Avenue, Ashton, admitted being in breach of the order and was fined £80 by the magistrates and ordered to pay £60 costs.

• Nicola Hibbert, 45, of St John’s Court, Hyde, admitted being in breach of a community order and was fined £80 and ordered to pay £60 court costs by Tameside magistrates.

• Mizanur Rahman, 22, of Honeywell Lane, Hathershaw, Oldham, has been ordered to pay £60 court costs by Tameside magistrates for breaching previous court orders. He admitted being in breach of the orders.

• Tameside magistrates fined Paul Stratton, 48, of Fleet Street, Ashton, £80 for being in breach of court orders. He admitted the offence and must also pay £60 court costs.

• Sarah Schofield, 32, of Melbourne Avenue, Chadderton, breached court orders and must pay £60 court costs after appearing at Tameside magistrates. She admitted the offence.

Michael Eaton, 53, of Miriam Street, Failsworth, appeared before Tameside magistrates to face a triple driving charge.

The offences related to driving while disqualified, without insurance and failing to stop when required to do so.

All of the charges had happened on May 15, 2018, in Failsworth.

He pleaded guilty to all three and magistrates ordered him to carry out 100 hours unpaid work plus banned him from the road for a further six months.

He must pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £85.

A van driver has been banned from the road for three months and must pay out over £500.

Mitica Avram, 48, of Wyndale Road, Oldham, appeared before Tameside magistrates to face two charges committed in Dover last October.

The first charge related to exceeding the legal cargo weight the van he was driving could carry and the second to a charge concerning driving while disqualified.

Tameside magistrates heard he had pleaded guilty to both offences at East Kent Magistrates’ Courts. Appearing at Tameside for sentencing he was fined a total of £420, disqualified from driving for three months and must also pay £85 court costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

Anthony Clifford stole £284 from Dukinfield-based charity Our Kids Eyes back in October 2018, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 28-year-old, of Mottram Road, Hyde, pleaded guilty to the offence and was handed a six weeks curfew order.

It means he must remain at his address between the hours of 7pm and 7am for the duration of the curfew. He was also instructed to pay back every penny of the £284 taken.

Tameside magistrates have jailed Jordan Hankin for 12 weeks for breaking into a golf club.

The court heard the 23-year-old, of no fixed abode, had broken into Werneth Low Golf Club in Gee Cross on October 28 last year with intent to steal.

He pleaded guilty to the offence.

Magistrates jailed him, stating the break-in was aggravated by his previous record of offending. He must pay a victim surcharge of £122.

Tameside magistrates have jailed John Skidmore for committing a catalogue of offences in Glossopdale.

The 41-year-old, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to assaulting two individuals in Hadfield on December 6 last year, plus a series of thefts of alcohol, food and petty thefts from various shops.

These included taking a bottle of wine from McColls and food on a couple of occasions from Tesco in Hadfield, plus various items from Glossop’s B&M Bargains store.

The offences had all happened throughout last December.

Tameside magistrates jailed him for a total of 18 weeks, hearing the offences had happened while the defendant was subject to a suspended jail sentence. He was ordered to pay a total of £41.28 compensation.
