Over-50s can enjoy a free two-course meal after Age UK Tameside launched their annual Winter Warm Hub last week.
The scheme will run from 1:30pm each Wednesday and Friday until the end of February at the charity’s HQ on Katherine Street, Ashton.
It has been running each winter since 2019, with Age UK Tameside CEO, Marcia Thorpe, saying it is a vital date on the calendar for many older residents in the borough: “Last year, we served 549 free meals. Alongside it we run the Winter Woolies Giveaway, which is where we hand out hats, gloves, socks and blankets. We gave out 1,130 last year.
“For older people who are particularly in need, we do a Winter Warm Bag, where we include a hot water bottle, hand warmers, an extra thick blanket, and we give information about how to stay warm.”
Funding for the project changes from year-to-year, with money coming from local authorities and the National Lottery.
However, Age UK Tameside are having to find the money from their own fundraising in 2025, meaning the Winter Warm Hub has gone down from five days per week to two this year.
With times being tough, Marcia thinks people are more willing to ask for help than before: “Especially over the last two years, we’re finding that pride is being put aside, because people are really, really suffering.
“We’re getting a lot of people call up saying ‘I’ve never claimed anything in my life, but I don’t know what to do.’ It shows us that that need is out there and people can’t indulge in that pride. That’s how much people are suffering.”
Once the initiative ends, March will see the return of Free Lunch Fridays, which will also include a two-course meal, refreshments, and the option of staying at the Age UK Tameside Hub until 4pm.
“You don’t have to prove anything, or show your benefit book or your bus pass,” said Marcia. “It’s for anyone who’s over 50. You need to book in and let us know if you’ve got any special dietary needs, and then away you go.”
