Anniversary celebration for Glossop Fibro Support Group

Fibromyalgia is often considered to be a hidden disability. People who have it are in constant pain and often can't walk very far.

Sheila Webster suffers from the condition so 15 years ago she set up the Glossop Fibro Support Group.

The group meets once a month with members offering help and support to each other.

Members come from all over the High Peak as well as from Tameside.

Earlier this month the group celebrated its 15th anniversary with a party in Glossop.

Sheila, 74, from Wood Street, said: “I was diagnosed with fibro in 1990 and to begin with it didn’t really affect my life that much.

“But as I’ve got older I am finding more difficult to live my daily life as I am in constant pain. It causes sleep problems, fatigue, and often emotional and mental distress.

“People with fibromyalgia may be more sensitive to pain than people without the condition. For example I can no longer just go for a walk. I now have to use a walker.

“Many members of the Glossop support group either have to use sticks to walk or some other mobility aid.”

The group has only recently started meeting face-to-face again.

During lockdown they had to reply on phone calls and text messaging.

The group meets on the second Thursday of each month at The Vineyard, 18-20 Charlestown Road, Glossop SK13 8JN.
