Concert in Glossop helps raise vital funds for Turkey and Syria appeal

The local community packed into a Glossop church for a concert which has raised vital funds for the Turkey and Syria earthquake appeal.

Central Methodist Church on Chapel Street hosted the fundraiser last Saturday (25 February), which was organised by volunteers and featured local musicians.

A fantastic £974.43 was raised from two donation buckets on the day, and generous people have also donated more than £750 through a JustGiving page which is still open

All proceeds have gone to the humanitarian charity The British Red Cross, to support all those affected by the devastating earthquakes in the two countries.

Chief organiser Stephenie Leung told us: "As a professional pianist, I've participated in many well-organised fundraising concerts, but as a fundraiser organiser, I'm a complete amateur. This was my first ever fundraising concert, and I hope it won't be my last one.

"I was also very grateful to have been able to engage the young musicians who go to our local schools in Glossop. Their courage and dedication in their playing were admirable. All the performers had no idea how many people would turn up on the day, but we all knew that we would perform the same way whether there were 10 or 110 in the audience.

"I'm so proud of Lydia in particular, who had never had a singing lesson, or performed in public with a live pianist, who emailed me to ask for an opportunity to perform to an audience so she could become a more confident singer.

"I've enjoyed every bit of 'the mad rush' in organising something for and within the community. Together, Glossopians definitely made a little difference in the lives of those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria."
