End of an era at Duke of Norfolk

She's looked after more than 2,000 local youngsters at Duke of Norfolk Church of England Primary School during the lunch hour for almost 40 years.

But last Friday marked the final time that Jean Wykes oversaw the lunch period as the lead midday supervisor.

Remarkably, Jean, from Old Glossop, has been at the Royle Avenue school since 1980!

And to celebrate, there was a special morning assembly for staff and pupils to look back on Jean's time at Duke of Norfolk.

There was music and plenty of memories shared by current pupils, while some lovely comments were read out from past pupils.

Fellow midday supervisor Simon Holmes thanked Mrs Wykes for helping him when he first started at the school a few years ago.

Head teacher Esther Bland also had some kind words to say about the 71-year-old, who even finds time to go for a swim before she starts work!

An emotional Jean was presented with some gifts before talking to us about her long career at the school.

"I've enjoyed it here," she said. "There have been a lot of changes of teachers and head teachers and children. I've really enjoyed being here and I will miss not coming anymore. I thank everyone for what they have done for me and I wish the school all the best and I love all of the children."

Kellie Wilson, deputy headteacher, said: "Our lovely Mrs Wykes has worked in our school for the past 39 years as a midday supervisor. In total, she has cared for over 2,000 children. Some are now parents or even grandparents of our current pupils.

"Jean has come every day, come rain or shine, with a sunny smile and caring approach. She will be truly missed by everyone at the Duke of Norfolk CE Primary School, and we wish her well in her well-earned retirement.

"The assembly went really well. It was a joyous, yet sad occasion for the school. However, we think we made it really memorable for Jean and sent her off with lots of happy memories of her time here."

Jean is now enjoying the start of her retirement with a well-earned trip to New Zealand.
