Special birthday celebrations for 'remarkable' Tintwistle woman

Doris Wildgoose was born into a world of silent movies, no penicillin and no sliced bread.

At the age of 14, she left school and began working in a glove factory in Hyde. During World War Two she made gloves and gas capes for the armed forces.

Over the years Doris got married to James and they had five children, Linda, Jim, Alan, Ronnie and Dave. She became a full-time mother. But when James died in 1968, she had to go back to work to feed her family.

Last weekend, Doris celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at her home in Tintwistle. She received a card from the Queen, which daughter Linda says she loves.

Arnfield Brass Band played many of Doris’s favourite songs at the event, including ‘Londonderry Air’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘Memory’ and most appropriately ‘Singing In The Rain’. Sadly the weather didn’t hold out for Doris’s party, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the guests, who were treated to fish and chips and afternoon tea.

Tintwistle Parish Council chairman Marianne Stevenson and Deputy Allan Dyer came along to bring Doris a gift.

Allan told the Chronicle: “We like to mark 100th birthday celebrations by bringing along a small gift. Doris is a remarkable lady.”

Doris’s children say she has been fit all her life and is stubbornly independent. She lives alone in the same house she has lived in for the last 65 years. Carers visit her regularly and her family all live locally and see her often.

Doris herself puts her longevity down to ‘hard work, walking everywhere, laughter and brandy!’
