Eco scarecrows go on display in Stalybridge

Scarecrows made entirely from recycled materials by school children and young people in Stalybridge went on display in the town on Saturday (24 September).

The scarecrows are located at The Community Hub on Grosvenor Street in the town and you can pop in to enjoy the display at anytime. The scarecrows will be on show until Friday (30 September).

The initiative is part of ‘The Big Green Week’ – which runs from today (Saturday) until 2 October – a nationwide campaign which aims to highlight the issues of climate change and how communities can play their part protecting nature.

The Women’s Institute is supporting the Big Green Week alongside other groups including the Manchester United Foundation.

Locally, the Stalybridge WI is playing its part, having encouraged local schools to make scarecrows from recycled materials which have now gone on show at The Community Hub.

Val Clemence, from Stalybridge Women’s Institute, said: “The Women’s Institute is a member of the Climate Coalition and we are very keen to promote care for the planet, and looking at ways of helping to tackle climate change.

“In this instance we are hoping to promote recycling and raise awareness amongst the children of local schools.”

Last year the Stalybridge WI provided wooden planters along with compost and plants to primary schools in Stalybridge and some in Dukinfield.
