Hattersley pays tribute to PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone

Local councillors were joined by MP Jonathan Reynolds, Deputy Mayor of Tameside Taf Sharif and local community workers and residents to pay tribute to murdered police officers Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone.

There was a show of support on Sunday (18 September) for relatives of the pair, on the 10th anniversary of the cowardly attack that claimed their lives as they defended their community.

Councillor Janet Cooper gave an emotional address, sharing her experiences of having met “the girls” and how grateful she was for the difference they made to policing in the area.

MP Jonathan Reynolds also told those gathered of how he heard of the attack and still felt moved to this day by the tragic events.

Floral tributes were laid at the memorial which stands at the entrance to the Hattersley Hub, adding to those already placed by community groups and residents.

Councillor Betty Afleck led a prayer for the officers and their families and a minutes silence to show everyone’s respect. Members of the local constabulary were also in attendance, a reminder of their readiness to defend the community without thought of their own safety.
